Each eyelash arises from a hair follicle and is composed of keratin, the same protein found in hair and nails. They have a tapered shape, with the thickest part near the base and gradually thinning towards the tips. The primary function of eyelashes is to protect the eyes. They act as a barrier against dust, debris, and other foreign objects, helping to prevent these particles from entering and irritating the eyes. The sensitive nerve endings at the base of the eyelashes also trigger a reflex to close the eyelids quickly in response to touch.
